Our mission
A key that unlocks a lifelong reader.
“I didn’t like to read as a kid, so I wrote the books I wish I’d had. Books that aren’t overwhelming, ones that make a child laugh and build confidence. And ones they can relate to, actually finish, and want to read again!”
Diane Alber, author of Key Chapter Books
- The kid who wants a story they can actually finish.
- The parent reading aloud who needs something fun, not endless.
- The little version of Diane who would have lit up at a book full of pictures and short chapters.

Parents ask
What makes them dyslexia friendly?
Every detail, from layout to language, was designed by an author who struggled with undiagnosed dyslexia herself.
More questions & answersWhat makes Key Chapter Books dyslexia friendly?
High-interest topics, short chapters, illustrations that support decoding, a consistent layout, a familiar font with extra letter and line spacing, first-person narration, lots of humor, and a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter.
What ages are they for?
They’re written for ages 6–10, but many 12-year-olds and older enjoy them too. The stories are funny and relatable, so the key is matching the topic to your reader: humor, friendship, animals or adventure.
Why not use a “dyslexia font”?
Weighted fonts like OpenDyslexic don’t work for everyone and many readers find them distracting. Diane uses a larger familiar font with extra spacing, shorter chapters and pictures for context, which helps a wider range of readers.
Do they have decodable features?
Yes. Repetition, structure and visuals support decoding. They aren’t basic phonics readers. They’re the perfect next step for kids who have some decoding skills and are ready for longer, high-interest stories.
Which series should we start with?
If you’re not sure, the 10-book Series Starter Bundle includes Book 1 from ten different series. Your reader tries them all and tells you which one to get next.
Are these AR books?
Not yet, but teachers can request quizzes through Renaissance’s “Suggest AR Quizzes” form.
